Black History Month with Thony Loui

by Thony Loui

Thony is a Haitian visual designer and comic book artist who created the first Haitian superhero, Djatawo. He has overcome color blindness to create a wide range of comic superheroes.

In 2017, he was one of the two artists chosen to represent Haiti in the 5th Ibero-American Biennial of Design in Madrid. A year later, he was featured on the Conan O’Brien show filmed on location in Haiti.

He was recently commissioned to paint a portrait of the mayor of Atlanta, Keisha Lance Bottoms and was awarded by Teatro SEA, a Puerto Rican and Latino theater in Manhattan , at their special cultural event called BoriMix, for his superhero creations Djatawo and especially Tanama, a supershero who uses her special powers to support smallholder farmers—and women smallholders in particular—in Haiti and around the world as they overcome tremendous hardships and fight off evil forces to combat climate change through tree planting.

With the collaboration of the Smallholder Farmers Alliance (SFA), Thony Loui is now a brand ambassador for the well-renowned footwear and clothes company, Timberland, in their new campaign Nature Needs Heroes. The artist has also recently branched out to design a line of home products, clothing and giftware.
