BLACK RESILIENCY: COPING WITH A GLOBAL EMERGENCY AS A BLACK ARTIST
Last year Atizay launched the Encuentro Afrocostarricense de Artes Visuales, a call to acknowledge the underrepresentation of the afro community in the visual artistic scene. It encourages the exploration of the richness, diversity, as well as the afro experience in Costa Rica in order to understand the need to open spaces for the afro community both inside and outside the artistic world.
This year we want to highlight our community’s resiliency as we explore ways to cope with the global crisis we are facing. It is no secret that when facing a global crisis, the most vulnerable social groups are the first to suffer the negative impact of these occurrences. And the black community is no exception. In addition to the economic and health consequences as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, our people continue to have to fight for their lives in a system that was not designed to take care of them.
While our community has had no choice but to build resiliency in order to survive, we want to make sure that people know the reality of the black experience around the world and how global crisis and movements shape it. Most importantly, we make it our mission to create spaces and opportunities for our people to find the support they need within the community while being able to enjoy what they are most passionate about.
The second edition of the EAAV, BLACK Resiliency: Coping with a Global Emergency as a BLACK Artist, will explore different aspects of blackness and provide our community with tools they might need to continue voicing their experience and sharing their work with our global audience.

- Inauguration Panel with artists from
Costa Rica, Spanish Panel (6 PM, EST.)
- Exhibit opening night (through November 1st)
- After Party with invited performers (8 PM, EST.)
Day 2 - October 31st, 2020
- Workshops and Talks (all day)
- Visual Art Exhibit (through November 1st)
Day 3 - November 1st, 2020
- Closing Panel with invited
artists, English Panel (5 PM, EST.)
- Visual Art Exhibit (all day)
- After Party with invited performers (7 PM, EST.)
