Cristina Maingrette

Cristina is a young Haitian artist living in Miami. Since she was a kid she has always been creating: using different media, sewing, drawing, painting. She developed a love for pen in ink when, in school, she would draw on her notebooks during class or her free time. After school she moved to New Jersey to finish her degree in accounting. While still working on her art, she started to develop her techniques. Each piece in this series is made with black ink on paper. Simple, easy and accessible. Cristina believes in Art as a medium of expression or as she likes to say, a “diary”. And like a diary she opens her sketchbook and pours her heart out.

This body of work is called “Faces of the World” but they really are the different faces of my inner self. Art has always been a means of expressing my thoughts and my feelings...I would pick up my drawing pad and start drawing as a release. It helps me think, or maybe not think at all. Art is my punching bag, but it’s also a hug that comforts me. I draw what attracts my eyes and my hand does the rest. To explain each piece would be to explain how I really felt in the moment but I will let them speak for themselves.

Pyelila

Pierre-Richard Raphael, also known as Pyelila, is a young Haitian visual artist, specializing in Illustration, Photography and Graphic Design. Since his childhood, he has had deep interests in Haitian folklore and fantasy. Which has always shaped his art into a tool used to tell every beautiful story Haiti has to tell.

Pyelila studied art at the Ecole Nationale des Arts (ENARTS) in Port-au-Prince, where soon after he embarked on a freelance career in illustration and photography. This has given him a form of freedom that he uses to delve into the illustration of many aspects of the Haitian heritage that he feels need a voice. With this voice Pyelila illustrates the life and culture of Haiti. His stories delve into the history of Haiti’s Vodou religion, love and the everyday life of Haitian people.
